Block Paving, Resin
& Tarmac Driveways
Built on Proper Sub-Bases

A driveway carries two tons of car, every day, for 20 years. The difference between one that lasts and one that ruts, sinks and weeds over is everything you can't see — and we build that part properly first.

What we do

Driveways done properly — the first time.

What it is

New driveways in block paving, permeable block, resin-bound, resin-bonded, tarmac and concrete — all built on engineered sub-bases with proper edging, drainage and ducting for future services.

Who it's for

Homeowners replacing tired old driveways, anyone adding off-street parking, people fitting EV chargers who need ducting in place, and homeowners selling who know a tatty drive kills first impressions.

When you need it

When the existing driveway is rutted, sunken, weed-ridden or unsafe; when planning a new charger, gate or kerb dropper; or when the front of your house needs to match the standard of the back.

Why a specialist matters

Most failing driveways aren't the surface — it's the sub-base underneath. Anyone can lay a block, but very few crews dig deep enough, compact in proper layers, and edge-restrain correctly. We do, and that's why our driveways are still flat ten years later.

The cost of waiting

A failed driveway is a four-figure mistake on display every time you come home.

What happens if it's ignored

  • Inadequate sub-base depth (under 150mm of compacted Type 1) means rutting under wheel paths inside two winters.
  • Missing edge restraint allows blocks to walk outwards under traffic and the whole drive loses its lock within three years.
  • Non-permeable driveways over 5m² without planning permission can be enforced against — and that means lifting it back up.
  • No ducting installed at sub-base stage means digging up brand-new paving to run cables for a future EV charger or gate motor.

Mistakes we fix every month

  • Hiring a 'driveway specialist' who turns up at the door with no fixed address, no insurance and a cash-only quote — National Trading Standards data shows driveway scams are the single biggest doorstep fraud in the UK.
  • Going for the cheapest blocks without checking edge consistency — uneven blocks make a beautiful drive look amateur from day one.
  • Resin laid over old tarmac with no preparation — fails at the substrate within 18 months, leaving you to pay twice.
  • No falls or drainage on a fully sealed driveway — water sheets across the pavement and into the road, and your neighbours rightly complain.

Our process

A clear five-step system from first call to final handover.

  1. Step 1

    Site Visit & Inspection

We come to you, measure up, photograph the site and listen properly to what you want from the driveway.

  2. Step 2

    Written Quote & Diagnosis

You get an itemised, fixed-price quote within 48 hours — labour, materials, timings and what's specifically excluded.

  3. Step 3

    Schedule & Prepare

We agree a start date, order materials in advance and protect your home — dust sheets, walkways, skip placement.

  4. Step 4

    Build & Communicate

Daily progress updates from your dedicated foreman. No subcontractor merry-go-round — you see the same faces every day.

  5. Step 5

    Sign-Off & Handover

Final walk-around with you, snags fixed on the spot — we don't leave until you're happy with the finish.

What you get

Specific outcomes — not vague promises.

20-year driveway

Engineered sub-base, proper edge restraint, calibrated blocks or resin laid to manufacturer spec — built to outlast your next two cars.

Compliant & permeable where needed

We design to current SuDS guidance so larger drives don't trigger planning permission — using permeable block or resin-bound systems.

Future-proofed with ducting

EV charger ducting, gate motor cabling and garden lighting ducts installed at sub-base — no digging up the new drive in two years.

Insured & traceable

Local family company, fixed address, fully insured, written contracts. None of the doorstep-scam patterns Trading Standards warns about.

Disruption-controlled

Most domestic driveways finished in 5–8 days, with at least one parking space available throughout where possible.

Clean handover

Sealed, swept, kiln-dried sand brushed in, site cleared. We don't disappear after the bill clears.

The detail

Materials, methods and variations for driveways in Reading.

Driveways across the Reading, Newbury and Basingstoke area need to handle clay heave, root pressure from mature trees and 20+ years of daily car traffic. The right surface choice depends on the substrate, the drainage strategy and how the house looks. Here's how we build each type properly.

Materials we work with

Block paving
60mm or 80mm calibrated concrete blocks from Marshalls, Brett or Stonemarket. Standard 60mm for cars, 80mm if a small van or motorhome is parking regularly. Charcoal, autumn, terracotta and grey blends.
Permeable block paving
Tobermore Hydropave or Marshalls Drivesys — wider joints filled with grit allow water to soak through into a reservoir sub-base. Removes the need for planning permission on larger drives.
Resin-bound surfacing
Natural aggregate trowelled into a clear UV-stable resin to give a smooth, permeable, seamless finish. Brands: Daltex, SureSet. 18mm minimum depth over compliant sub-base.
Tarmac & asphalt
Hot-rolled asphalt to BS 594987, 50mm wearing course over 60mm binder, kerb-edged. Quick, durable and cost-effective for large drives where appearance is less critical.
Concrete
Brushed, pattern-imprinted or exposed aggregate concrete — C25/30 reinforced with A393 mesh, minimum 100mm depth on properly compacted sub-base with expansion joints.

Methods & techniques

Excavation & sub-base
Dig to 250–300mm below finished level, geotextile membrane, then 150mm minimum of Type 1 MOT compacted in 75mm layers with a heavy plate or roller.
Edge restraint
Concrete-haunched kerb or block edging on every perimeter — the single biggest factor in long-term driveway stability.
Drainage & falls
1:80 minimum cross-fall to a gully, soakaway or permeable margin. SuDS-compliant approach for any drive over 5m² that drains to the public highway.
Block laying & joint filling
Blocks laid on a 50mm sharp-sand laying course, screeded level, vibrated with a roller plate, then kiln-dried sand brushed across and vibrated again to lock the surface.
Resin trowelling
Substrate primed, aggregate and resin mixed at correct ratio in a forced-action mixer, trowelled to depth in a continuous run — no joins, no edges.

Common variations & situations

  • Single car-width straight-in driveways
  • Double-width and turnaround driveways
  • Driveways with EV charger ducting and base
  • Permeable driveways for SuDS compliance
  • Driveways with electric gates and intercom ducting
  • Driveway extensions and parking bay additions
  • Resin overlay on sound existing tarmac or concrete
  • Heritage-style driveways with granite sett borders
  • Front garden conversions with kerb dropper applications
  • Combined driveway and front-garden landscaping

Residential vs commercial

Most of our driveway work is domestic. We take on small commercial car parks (offices, pubs, small developments in Reading and Newbury) where the spec is heavier-duty (80mm blocks, deeper sub-base, line marking) but the standard of preparation is the same.
